Bespoke landmark feature at entrance to the Pensacola Naval Air Station, that serves as the launching point for the flight training of every Naval Aviator, Naval Flight Officer (NFO), and Enlisted Aircrewman in the USA. Sculptural landmark entrance structure to the base, evoking aircraft forms whilst reminiscent of the diverging columns of the United States Airforce Memorial in Arlington VA.
The three diverging Skylar structures reaching over 40’ high. Hypar canopies range in size from 145f2 to 380f2 and are manufactured from a heavyweight PVC coated polyester woven mesh.
Situated on the Florida coastline, the structure is engineered to withstand hurricane wind forces. The structure is viewed from all angles, from land and sea, so a circular design was adopted with differing sizes of canopy to exaggerate the perspective.
The site is being reclaimed from the beach, so lifting and access plant had to navigate over soft sand. Tornadoes had swept through the area days before installation was due to commence, with over 12” of rainfall in one day, so great care had to be taken monitoring weather forecasts.
